The Warriors #5: Defenders of the City - 26

The bronze cross-bars slam into their iron brackets with a deafening, metallic ring that vibrates through the stone floor. Silence in the hall! Sit down, students, and let the dust of the streets settle instantly.

We have analyzed the white linen of the Scribe, the yellow wool of the Builder, the green of the Physician, and the gold-and-white stripes of the Merchant. Today, we open the scrolls on the iron shield that encloses this entire civilization, the raw muscle that keeps the wilderness from devouring everything we have built: The Warriors.

Do not look at a Gorean Warrior through the soft, hesitant lens of Earth’s modern militaries or police forces. In the sovereign city-state of Turmus, steel is the ultimate arbiter of reality. The Warriors do not debate; they execute. They do not de-escalate; they destroy the enemies of the Home Stone. Under John Norman’s chronicles, the universal Rules of Gor, and our specific municipal Turmus Laws, the Warriors hold an absolute monopoly over state violence, tactical defense, and martial honor. Their tunic is blood-red, and their law is written at the point of a gladius.

Listen closely, and learn the nature of the scarlet tunic before you cross one on the stones tonight.

Lesson 7: The Warriors: Defenders of the City

Scribe's Prefatory Note: "A Warrior's life belongs to his Home Stone; his death belongs to his Ubar; his steel belongs to whoever threatens the peace of the Cylinder." — Martial Codes, High Council of Turmus

I. Core Doctrine & Principles

The core doctrine of the Warrior Caste is the preservation of the Home Stone through offensive force, lethal defense, and unyielding martial discipline. They are the infantrymen, the crossbowmen, the heavy cavalry, and the legendary tarn-riders of Gor.

According to the martial archives indexed across The Gorean Cave and the explicit statutes of the Rules of Gor, the Warriors are universally identified by their short, proud Scarlet Tunic. Under Turmus Laws, their code—The Warrior's Code—is an absolute psychological and legal construct. They are trained from childhood to view cowardice as a capital crime, physical fitness as a civic duty, and loyalty to their commander as an unassailable contract. They do not serve for coin; they serve for the glory and survival of the city's honor.

II. Cultural Reality & Practical Application

When walking the ramparts or interacting with off-duty Warriors in the lower town of Turmus, you must understand these three operational realities:

  • The Monopoly of War-Steel: As we established in our legal carry tracks, no lower caste or foreign traveler may carry a sword within the walls. The long sword, the short gladius, and the heavy spear are the exclusive legal property of the Scarlet Tunic. If a commoner touches a Warrior's sword without explicit, ritual permission, it is viewed as a direct attempt to steal his caste honor, and the Warrior is legally permitted to execute that commoner on the spot.

  • The Authority of the Scarlet: On the streets of Turmus, the Warriors form the command structure of the City Guard. When a Warrior in scarlet issues a directive during a watch or a market dispute, his word carries the immediate weight of a Magistrate's decree. Under Turmus Laws, hesitating for even a second to obey a Warrior's direct tactical order is classified as Civic Defiance, allowing them to clear the obstruction with the flat of their blade or the point of their spear.

  • The Boundless Pride of the Code: A Warrior is intensely sensitive to insults. What a soft out-worlder considers a simple joke or a casual slight is interpreted by a Gorean Warrior as an assault on his Home Stone or his lineage. They do not sue for slander in a Scribe’s court; they demand an immediate settlement of honor with steel.

"He wore the short scarlet tunic of the warrior caste... at his left hip hung the short, broad-bladed Gorean sword. He carried himself with that loose, dangerous grace that belongs only to men who live by the blade and fear nothing under the sun."Tarnsman of Gor

III. Lexicon & Terminology

  • The Scarlet Tunic: The legally protected, blood-red vestment of the Warrior Caste, symbolizing the blood shed for the defense of the Home Stone.

  • The Warrior's Code: The rigid, unwritten ethical framework governing martial honor, battlefield conduct, deference to superiors, and the absolute duty to die before surrendering.

  • Gladius: The double-edged Gorean short sword; the primary, signature weapon carried by the infantry and city guardsmen of Turmus.

IV. Scholar's Examination

  • Scenario Question: A foreign traveler is sitting in a crowded Paga tavern near the Turmus canal. A Warrior in a scarlet tunic accidental bumps the traveler's stool while walking past. The traveler, feeling slighted, stands up, blocks the Warrior's path, and loudly demands an apology in front of the entire room. The Warrior slowly reaches for the hilt of his short sword. What fatal error did the traveler commit, and what does the law dictate?

  • Scribe's Key: The traveler has committed suicide through profound ignorance of custom. By publicly blocking a Warrior's path and loudly demanding submission (an apology), the traveler offered an unendurable Trespass of Honor against the martial caste. Under the Rules of Gor and Turmus Laws, a Warrior cannot apologize to a low-caste foreigner or commoner without breaking his code and disgracing his tunic. The Warrior is fully within his legal rights to draw his gladius and slay the traveler on the spot for provoking a duel of honor. To survive, the traveler must instantly drop to one knee, lower his eyes to the floorboards, and say clearly: "Forgive the clumsy posture, Noble Warrior. No disrespect was intended to your steel or your Home Stone."

The water clock is dripping its final measure for this assembly, students. The scarlet tunic is the iron wall that allows you to sleep safely in your beds tonight. When you step out into the evening mist of Turmus, look upon the color red with absolute gravity. Give them the center-stone, lower your gaze, and keep your hands visibly clear of your utility knives.

Pack your slates and clear the benches. Walk directly to your quarters under the watchful eye of the gate patrols. Dismissed.
